Massage
I use a fusion of techniques when treating clients. There is not a distinct line between some of the techniques and sessions may incorporate all depending on your needs.
Communicating your goals for the session will enable me to combine the right blend of techniques for you. You do not need to decide which massage (or Scar Work session) is more appropriate at the time of booking as I incorporate whatever techniques are most suitable for you, based on your consultation before your treatment – this will determine which areas the massage will focus on, and how much pressure is used. Pressure is also adjusted throughout the treatment to suit your preference.
Holistic or Swedish Massage
Holistic or Swedish Massage aims to treat the individual as a whole, taking into account your physical, emotional and spiritual state.
Treatment can include using light pressure on the superficial layers or a firmer pressure on the deeper layers. There may also be kneading of the muscles, vibration or percussion to stimulate the muscles, and passive and/or active joint movements.
All these techniques help to increase the circulation of blood and lymph, soften and relax the tissues, reduce cortisol levels in the body (the stress hormone), and provide a generalized sense of relaxation for the client.
Deep Tissue Massage
This type of massage uses more focused and deeper pressure on points of particular tension and will tackle achy and knotted areas effectively. The muscles can be “picked up”, stretched and lengthened, and adhered muscle compartments can be separated. Strokes will be slower and possibly shorter in order to allow for a slow release of tension from the muscles.
Some areas may be skipped so more time can be spent on specific areas of need.
I will work with you throughout the treatment to make sure that the pressure is always comfortable - it should always feel like "good" pain. I do not subscribe to the old "No pain no gain" belief when it comes to massage, or “the deeper the better”. The primary goal is more about promoting change in the structure of the body rather than a treatment for general relaxation. However, this can still be a deeply relaxing treatment and plenty of soothing techniques can be included to provide the perfect balance for you.
One massage style often forms the basis of the session, with other techniques incorporated as required.
A Swedish massage would be the best foundation if your goal is to relax, reduce stress, and have a full body massage with firm pressure.
If you require some focused “fix-it” work on minor nagging spots, a 50/50 massage might be suggested, with deep tissue techniques only being used where needed.
A sports massage would be more suitable if you have an area of chronic or acute pain and limited mobility that needs focused work or if you are recovering from an athletic event and have a specific group of muscles needing attention.
What to expect from your treatment
For any treatment, I will undertake a full Consultation and Assessment before your first visit. This enables me to get a detailed picture of your health and wellbeing and the issue(s) you are seeking help with. We can then discuss the best course of action for you.
When you attend for your appointment, I will check to make sure that nothing has changed since our consultation and determine what priorities for treatment you have.
Depending on which part of your body I am treating, there may be a requirement to remove some outer clothing but you will never be asked to remove underwear or anything you are not comfortable to take off. Your modesty is maintained at all times with towels or sheets as required.
I will always explain what I have planned for your session so that you feel comfortable and safe. I encourage feedback throughout to know that you are happy with the pressure and techniques I am using, the temperature of the room and so on.
After your treatment, I will then run through any appropriate home care advice and exercises.
“Highly recommend Louise! With every massage she eases tensions, sore or stiff points and puts you into a state of relaxation. If I have an ache in a particular place she tailors the massage to suit and I leave the session relaxed, refreshed and ache free.”
